Rhinoplasty

Open and Closed procedures

There are two main types of rhinoplasty regarding the approach: open and closed.

This refers very specifically to whether all the incisions are hidden inside the nose (closed) or in an open procedure that also includes a small incision across the columella (in between nostrils).

Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages and the choice of approach depends on the goals and desires the patient is trying to achieve.

Open Rhinoplasty

Closed Rhinoplasty

Closed Rhinoplasty

An open rhinoplasty includes two discrete incisions inside each nostril and an additional small incision is made across the columella (in between nostrils) connecting the two.

While this technique may leave a very small scar, these tend to heal quickly with proper care - you will be able to see (or not see!) many examples on my electronic media or you can ask to see specific examples in the consultation.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Closed Rhinoplasty

Closed Rhinoplasty

During a closed rhinoplasty two discrete incisions are made inside each nostril. It is through these incisions that all alterations will be made. Because there are no external incisions, there are no visible scaring. However, the small incisions can limit the surgeon's visibility, limiting the extent of possible adjustments. This technique may not be suitable for from complex rhinoplasties.
